Join the Chorale for The Jewish Composers Series and Annual Benefit

Please note the new venue for this performance due to construction taking place at Los Angeles Pierce College:     Plaza del Sol Performance Hall, CSUN, 18111 Nordhoff St, Northridge, CA

By request, the chorale will perform the music of Cole Porter.  One of the area’s most popular groups playing Jewish music, the Golden State Klezmer Band, will also join this year’s concert.

A special guest who knew Cole Porter, Maurice Engelman, will delight us with stories and remembrances of the great composer.

Porter was a contemporary of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, and may be best known for his Broadway works “Kiss Me, Kate” and “Anything Goes”.  He wrote both the music and lyrics for many Broadway and Hollywood hits with great success, producing many tunes such as “Night and Day’, “It’s De-Lovely”, and “Just One of Those Things”, that are considered standards.

The audience will be invited to sing along with the chorale and soloists on these classic songs.

Please arrive by 7:30 p.m. for the  visit with Maurice Engelman.

Parking: $6 per car, Lots G3, B1 or B2.  See the CSUN website for a map of parking areas.

Auditions for the 2011-2012 Season!

The San Fernando Valley Master Chorale is auditioning singers and a Master of Ceremonies for the remainder of its 2012 season.  Soloists and ensemble singers will be heard on Sunday, January 29 by appointment at Pierce College in Woodland Hills, and ensemble singers on Monday, February 6 at 7PM at Pierce College.  Call Annette at (818) 985-7312.

The season will include a Cabaret show in March, Bach’s Cantata #4 (Christ lag in Todesbanden) and Mary E. Caldwell’s rarely-heard “Of Time and Eternity” on April 14.

The Chorale rehearses on Monday nights in Woodland Hills and performs at CSUN (Northridge).  Celebrating their 22nd anniversary season, shows have included a Broadway review featuring music of Cole Porter last October; Respighi’s ‘Laud to the Nativity’ last December; an annual benefit Cabaret  March 10; and Mary E. Caldwell’s ‘Of Time and Eternity’ and Bach’s Cantata #4 on Apr. 14.  Soloists will be needed for all works.

The San Fernando Valley Master Chorale, Terry Danne, Artistic Director, is an auditioned chorus with 50 to 80 singers participating.  They perform musical theater, choral masterworks with orchestra, jazz, and opera highlights programs.  The group is comprised of professional and community singers and students, and showcases resident company soloists as well as guest performers in every performance.

The last several years have seen the Chorale performing at Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall in New York, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, and at the American Choral Directors Association Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii.  They recently hosted a national workshop in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Their stirring performances of Orff’s Carmina Burana, Verdi’s Requiem and the Duke Ellington Sacred Concert at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre were enthusiastically received by audience and critics alike.

The Chorale has been invited to make guest appearances in Las Vegas and Washington, D.C. during the 2012 – 2013 season.

Final Concert of the Season – A Tribute

Celebrate a musical Memorial Day with the chorale and a bevy of soloists.

Our last concert of the season will focus on meaningful texts for the occasion.  “Testament of Freedom”  is drawn from writings of Thomas Jefferson as the Colonies prepared to seek their independence, spirituals reference the emancipation from slavery and “Les Miserables”  reminds us this search is universal.  The “Chichester Psalms” by Bernstein and “Mass in G Minor” by Vaughan Williams offer solace through  faith.

Soloists include Fe’ao Bloomfield, Karen Matranga, Brittney Wheeler, John Wallis, and Joaquin Labado.  Nima Sahabi will play a Chopin piano prelude, and Paul Baker will be the guest harpist.
